MIES & the inheritance of modernism - Symposiums and lectures

    During the exhibition, there are various symposiums and lectures organized. Expert speakers will elaborate on any of the five Mies projects from the exhibition. These symposia are organized in cooperation with among others OMA, Chipperfield Architects and Ivo Hammer at the universities of Eindhoven, Hasselt, Liège and Aachen.

    The MIES-symposia are recognized as advanced vocational training:
    > from the SBA (Stichting Bureau Architectenregister) for architects, urbanists, landscape architects and interior architects
    > from the AKNW (Architektenkammer Nordrhein-Westfalen) for architects and interior architects (minisymposia: each 2 hrs., intern. Symposium 3 hrs.)

    This symposium is interesting for every architect/politician who has to decide whether – and if so, how – to salvage dilapidated modernistic buildings for the future.

    International lectures by – and panel discussion with – a.o. Gunny Harboe (Gunny Harboe Architects, Chicago), Martijn Jaspers (Chipperfield Architects), Wessel de Jonge (TU Delft/Wessel de Jonge Architecten) and Friso van der Steen (Mecanoo). They will discuss the restoration/renovation of buildings by Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) and the way of dealing with our modernist heritage in general.

    Martijn Jaspers will talk about the restoration of the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin; Friso van der Steen about the restoration of the Martin Luther King Memorial Library in Washington. Both being buildings by Mies van der Rohe. Wessel de Jonge will speak from his rich experience with regard to research on 20th century architecture and the salvage and reuse of these buildings, a.o. the former Sanatorium Zonnestraal and the Van Nelle Factory in Rotterdam. Preservation specialist Gunny Harboe will describe the restoration processes he recommended and navigated for several buildings by Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan and Mies van der Rohe.
