Vera Gulikers, whose work is in SCHUNCK’s collection, painted multiple wall paintings in the SCHUNCK school of music.
To do this she studied the representation of musicians in the history of painting and music. She noticed that female figures nearly always play a secondary role in these depictions, for example as ‘carer’ or ‘enchantress’. In her wall paintings Gulikers chooses to give women in the history of art and music no longer a secondary role, but the leading act in which they are placed centre stage in their own right.
In 2017, Vera Gulikers (1991) won the Koninklijke Prijs voor de Schilderkunst. In 2018, she was artist in residence in the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht. She obtained her Bachelor’s at the Fine Arts Academy in Maastricht (2014-2016) and went on to attain a Master’s degree in fine arts at the Sint Lucas academy in Antwerp (2016).
This mural opens on 20 September together with Tegendraads (Against the Grain) / Aad de Haas – 100 jaar & Mural: Gijs Frieling – Theofanie – Up and Out.
