Four Seasons
The EarthCam webcam network streams live images of tourist attractions 24/7, including cemeteries where famous people are buried. Director Radu Jude’s documentary is composed entirely of screen recordings of Andy Warhol’s gravesite. Visitors leave Campbell’s soup cans on the grave or pose beside it. A family has a picnic. Occasionally, deer run between the gravestones. Some visitors are aware of being filmed: someone waves at the camera, another pulls down their trousers.
The footage is divided into four seasons. We see the grave during the day and, barely visible, at night. Sometimes with sound, sometimes without. Occasionally, the view zooms in, or a cursor appears on the screen. Meanwhile, a question arises: are we looking at Warhol’s grave, at the people observing the grave, or at the director watching this livestream on his computer?
