Together with the Mijnstreek Oost Crew (MOC), SCHUNCK presents the eleventh edition of the Frictions Festival on 11 December. Artists from the MOC will take you on an exclusive hardcore punk-themed tour through the artworks of Rooted in Change: DSM art collection from meeting room to museum. The DSM and the mining past have shaped Heerlen and the region — but the MOC is just as important, shaping musical identity, providing an outlet, and fueling the community’s spirit.
Unique sets and exclusive releases
At Frictions #11, art and music come together. Enjoy showcases from hardcore legends Born From Pain and IMP SYN, the scene’s unexpected “cousin.” Born From Pain proves they are more than just ‘hél drop’, performing a one-off atmospheric set in a unique museum setting, together with IMP SYN. Don’t miss it!
Witness the Heerlen world premiere of Born From Pain’s new music video, as well as the release of an exclusive 7-inch Sint Barbara limited edition pack, available only on this night. Plus, you can screen-print your own De Letste Sjiech / Frictions t-shirt - or even a jacket, sweater, underwear, or tights - just bring it along.
MOC
Since the late 1990s, numerous bands and fanzines gathered under the name Mijnstreek Oost Crew (MOC). They organized countless shows, laying the foundation for a thriving alternative scene that remains strong and vibrant today. The MOC has had a major influence on the subculture of Parkstad — and beyond.
Born From Pain
Born From Pain is a Dutch hardcore band from the Eastern Mining Region (part of the notorious MOC), founded in 1997. They became known for their energetic shows and have grown into the international act they are today, touring Europe, the United States, Mexico, and Japan, and sharing stages with bands such as Hatebreed, Madball, Zero Mentality, Six Feet Under, Soulfly, Agnostic Front, and Slayer.
IMP SYN
IMP SYN hails from the south, creeping into your auditory senses. Sven Vek and Jeffrey Hanssen blend poetry and electronics into a raw, experimental mix of broken keyboards and unexpected sounds. Sven described them during Popronde as “Spinvis for speed sniffers.”
Rooted in Change
Rooted in Change presents, for the first time, a large selection from the former DSM corporate collection, now part of the SCHUNCK collection. Discover 200 works that connect nearly a century of Limburg history, mining heritage, and international themes such as migration, sustainability, and identity. Explore familiar regional stories, surprising artworks, guided tours with context, and accessible activities throughout the building.
About Frictions
Frictions is a community-based festival where art, literature, and emotions meet. Each edition features a new eclectic lineup of regional heroes and creative partners. The festival is aimed at local residents, art and culture enthusiasts, youth, students, and social organizations. Community involvement is at its core.
