Martin Gjoleka (RWTH Aachen) wins 32nd Euregional Prize for Architecture
On 15 October, the Euregional Prize for Architecture was awarded for the 32nd time. The first prize went to Martin Gjoleka (RWTH Aachen) for his project 'Unzeitgemässe Betrachtungen'.
The prize is awarded annually for the best graduation project of the five architecture faculties in the cities of Hasselt, Liège, Maastricht and Aachen. The jury for the 32nd edition consisted of Pieter Bedaux, Caroline Lateur, Johnny Leya and the chair team Judith Reitz and Jerome Paumen.
First prize for Unzeitgemässe Betrachtungen
The first prize (€2,500) went to Martin Gjoleka (RWTH Aachen) for his project 'Unzeitgemässe Betrachtungen.' According to the jury, this project needs a deep, comprehensive reflection; especially the accompanying film in which hyper-realistic images entice us to participate in an over-controlled reality. The work offers a deep reflection on our western civil society and a piece of time design that opens our eyes to what an architect can be and do. The jury praises this project for its bold and successful experimentation, in which poetry and criticism come together in a complete, meaningful work.
Second prize for IACOBUS SANDWICH
The second prize (€1,250) went to Alexander Collette, Xavier De Lanève and Adrien Vanwerst (ULG Liège) for the project 'IACOBUS SANDWICH'. This project integrates a museum, a library, a bar, co-working spaces and other community functions within its urban context. The architectural and spatial interventions are clearly communicated and meaningfully coincide with the existing environment. The playful, brilliant metaphor of the 'sandwich' refers the jury to the museum's spatial and flexible design, with its accumulation of functions and walking routes. With its down-to-earth presentation and elaborate detailing, combined with a catchy sincerity, the design fits convincingly into the urban context.
Third prize for The All Waters Bathhouse
Dasha Murashkina of the host university Academy of Architecture Maastricht won the third prize (500 euros) for her project 'The all waters bathhouse', a very calm and serene project that combines bathing, contemplative architecture, cinematography and poetic atmospheres. The jury debated several times the choice of an existing church as a building site. The courage to intervene in such a building and dismantle it to a minimum, creating a kind of ruin, was appreciated by the jury, but at the same time questioned.
