Death is one of the few certainties in life. How we perceive it, cope with it, and assign meaning to it varies from person to person, but it touches us all. 

Pause to reflect on death

Andy Warhol grapples with the concepts of transience and mortality in his art in fascinating ways. From his Shadowpaintings and black-and-white Marilyn Monroes to the skulls and screen prints in his Death and Disaster Series, death is both subtly and overtly present in his works. In this powerful setting, a ritual facilitator, palliative care expert, artist, and scientist will engage in a conversation about death, led by philosopher Barbara Strating. What can art, science, and rituals teach us about our mortal existence?

Film screening

As part of the program, Sleep #2 by filmmaker Radu Jude will be screened, a film previously shown at the IDFA and Locarno film festivals. This desktop film presents screen recordings of Andy Warhol’s grave, captured via EarthCam, a live webcam. From people placing Campbell’s soup cans on his grave to families having picnics and animals frolicking in the area, the film reflects various perspectives on mortality and memory.

This thematic conversation offers not only deeper insight but also space to pause and reflect on what unites us: the finiteness of life.
