Aad de Haas: Castle Strijthagen
3 October 2025 to 18 January 2026
Visit Aad de Haas: Castle Strijthagen in the Aad de Haas Gallery and explore the work and life of artist Aad de Haas (1920, Rotterdam – 1972, Schaesberg). De Haas lived and worked in South Limburg during the mining era, a time when the mines influenced almost every aspect of daily life.

Thanks to the mediation of writer Bertus Aafjes and Antoon Duinkerken, De Haas was given the opportunity by the Oranje-Nassau Mines to live with his family at Strijthagen Castle. There, he found peace, inspiration and appreciation — things that had previously been denied to him by the German occupiers, the Roman Catholic Church and art critics.
What You’ll See
- Works created at Strijthagen, showing the stylistic shifts De Haas went through.
- Art from the former Staatsmijnen collection, which — following the donation from dsm-firmenich — now forms part of SCHUNCK’s Aad de Haas Collection.
- Photographs of the castle’s interior and exterior, as well as how Aad (and, in one tapestry, his wife) artistically portrayed their home.
- Several later, more erotic paintings that offer an intimate glimpse into his final years.
Publication
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Aad de Haas, SCHUNCK released a new publication in 2020 offering a fresh perspective on Aad’s work, personality, and the spirit of his time. The publication is available for purchase in the SCHUNCK museum shop.
