Extended Presentation of Rooted in Change at Heerlen Town Hall

After the Rooted in Change exhibition closed on 1 March at the Dutch Mining Museum and SCHUNCK, part of the DSM Collection remains on view at Heerlen Town Hall. This presentation extends the exhibition, offering visitors the chance to explore the historical roots of the collection further.

On the ground and upper floors of the monumental hall, you can see a selection of twenty-six early works from the DSM Collection. The display includes paintings and some works on paper by artists such as Ger Lataster, Jef Diederen, Pieter Defesche, Laurens Bisscheroux, Charles Eyck, Willem Hofhuizen and Eugène Laudy, alongside works by various other artists in the collection.

The presentation highlights how art, industry and the region are intertwined, providing a substantive counterpart to the contemporary works previously shown at the Glaspaleis.

The Town Hall as an Exhibition Space

Heerlen Town Hall was designed in 1945 by Frits Peutz, the same architect behind the Glaspaleis. Following its 2023 renovation, which connected the building to Mecanoo’s new city office, the monumental hall has become a public space where art and architecture come together.

Since its opening, the hall has been used as an exhibition space. SCHUNCK continues this tradition with presentations that make the development of the collection visible and connect it to the city.
