There is no Briton who is not familiar with the 1984 miners' strike in protest against the announced closure of the mines. People who lived through the period remember it well and have passed it on to their children. This period is still sensitive for many people and is far from being forgotten. But one particular incident during these strikes has not received any publicity, and this forms the backdrop for the film Pride.
Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners
During the strikes, the miners and their families were struggling because there was no more income. Therefore, fundraising events were held. London's Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) also decides to raise money, but encounters difficulties when they try to give the amount to a union. Because taking money from gays is not possible. However, after a search, they find a union in Wales, whose president says yes. The LGSM travels to the town, but many residents are not happy about it. They are prejudiced and do not exactly receive them with open arms. But slowly the two groups grow closer. Joe, one of the LGSM members, is also making an individual journey; he is slowly finding out what his place in the world is.
Facts and feelgood
That Pride is based on facts is what makes the film so strong. At the same time, all the ingredients of a feel-good film are present. The combination of touching elements, humour and personal development is reminiscent of films like Billy Elliot or The Full Monty, a list to which this film can definitely be added.
After the film, there will be an aftertalk with Theo Sponselee and Sam Coenen of Queer Parkstad, and there will be explanations by Martin van de Weerden about the only resistance period of miners in Heerlen. Alderman Peter van Zutphen also talks, as an eyewitness to the miners' strikes in the UK.
