Curator for a day

9 Nov 2021 - 6 Mar 2022

What meaning might you attach to a work of art? And what works would you show in an exhibition if you were to take on the role of curator? With these questions in mind, each year a group of local residents is asked to sift through SCHUNCK’S municipal collection. The result is an exhibition of works from the collection of their own making.

SCHUNCK Glaspaleis

This year we asked an art group from the Heerlen neighbourhood of Vrieheide to make their selection. In existence since January 2021, Vrie-Art is a Heerlen-based start-up which allows local residents to express and develop their creative side. The theme for the exhibition they have put together has been inspired by the In Search of Sharawadgi exhibition. The latter presented the ideas and dreams of Piet Oudolf, the most famous garden designer in the Netherlands, and LOLA Landscape Architects. The exhibition took visitors on a journey, showing them how public gardens and landscapes across the world have been transformed. From the High Line in New York, the gardens of Hauser & Wirth in Somerset and the Star Maze in Tytsjerk to Leisure Lane in Parkstad.

Curator voor één keer – which invites residents to act as stand-in curator – started in 2019/2020 with a group of participants from the retirement complex at Parc Imstenrade. The project brings the collection of works closer to residents of Heerlen – after all, in principle, the municipal collection belongs to them – so that they can more easily make acquaintance with the collection.

We aim to work with various Heerlen-based groups for future editions, so that they too can get to know the SCHUNCK collection by way of this project. Fancy taking part in next year’s project with a group of your own? If so, make this known via collecties@schunck.nl and, who knows, you might get to curate your very own exhibition from the SCHUNCK collection.
