What meaning might you attach to a work of art? And, if you were curator, which works of art would you pick from a collection to show and why? With these questions in mind, each year a group of local residents is asked to sift through SCHUNCK’s municipal collection. The result is an exhibition of works which is of their own making. As part of the project, participants – on the one hand – gain a greater insight into the process of curating an exhibition and – on the other – learn more about the collection itself. The collection is, after all, owned by and intended for the city and townspeople of Heerlen.

Previous curators have included residents of a retirement complex at Parc Imstenrade (2020) and the Vrie-Art art club from the Heerlen neighbourhood of Vrieheide (2021). For this year’s exhibition, ‘PAND has been asked to select works from the collection. ‘PAND aims to inspire creativity in young people in the region and for them to get the best out of themselves.

Through a mix of events, debates, presentations and exhibitions, ‘PAND challenges citizens to practise art for themselves. To do this, they invite people from outside the region to come to
Heerlen.

This is to improve the city’s image in the outside world, to help define a Heerlen identity and to bring about cross-fertilisation between artists from inside and outside the region. For this edition of Curator for one day, they too will be making a selection from SCHUNCK’s municipal collection.
