The Town Hall of Heerlen, designed by architect Frits Peutz, was built between 1936 and 1942. Since its opening, artworks from the municipal art collection have been displayed in the lobby, along with rotating exhibitions featuring emerging regional talent.
Making Art Visible
In 1986, the municipal museum for modern and contemporary art, the Stadsgalerij, was established. From then on, rotating exhibitions were held in the museum building designed by Jo Coenen, just a stone's throw from the Town Hall. In 2003, the Stadsgalerij moved to the Glaspaleis on the Bongerd, and since 1 January 2009, the museum has been part of Stichting SCHUNCK, also located in the Glaspaleis.
Since its founding, the museum has had the core task of managing, expanding, and making visible the modern and contemporary art collection of the municipality of Heerlen. Showing selections from this collection in the publicly accessible lobby of the Town Hall remains an essential part of this mission.
Collection development is made possible through financial support from the municipality of Heerlen and the Mondriaan Fund.
The exhibition can be viewed from 7 April during office hours.
This activity is part of the Year of Heerlen's Heritage. In 2025, numerous activities and events will be organized in Heerlen to make its heritage visible or tangible once again.
