Italy, 1980s. In Riparbella, a village on the Tyrrhenian Sea, British archaeologist Arthur joins a group of tomb robbers. Dressed in a crumpled white summer suit, he appears somewhat disheveled. Once a respectable academic, Arthur is now in Tuscany, no longer conducting scientific research but hunting ancient treasures to sell for high prices on the collectors’ black market.

He is accompanied on his excavations by a group of homeless youths and older men who admire him for his uncanny ability to locate Etruscan artefacts. Yet Arthur seems lost, mourning the death of his great love, Beniamina.

Director Alice Rohrwacher continues her exploration of a lesser-known side of Italy — one often overlooked in film, yet vital to understanding a country full of contradictions and mystery. La Chimera is a journey through life and death, forest and city, solitude and festivity. The film is a celebration of life and a meditation on loss and grief.
