Around the exhibition, Filmhuis De Spiegel, in collaboration with SCHUNCK, will be screening five different films that, in the broadest sense, connect to the themes of the exhibition. On 15 December, the film will be 'La Última Tierra.'
La Última Tierra
A man sits by his wife’s deathbed. He feeds her, watches over her, and reassures her. After she breathes her last in the early morning, he prepares her body. The tender, calm actions evoke the relationship between two people who have shared an entire life together and are now separated forever. As he seeks solace in practical tasks – digging a grave, washing the deceased – a sorrow wells up in him that traditional mourning rituals cannot address.
Director Pablo Lamar captures the grandeur of nature, which will persist long after the woman and man have died. A recurring image is fire – a candle, a campfire, a final blaze that burns down the hut in which they lived. Lamar makes extensive use of suggestive ambient sounds from nature, making the film not only a contemplation of aging and death but also a meditative study on the place of humans within nature.
Too few people know this wonderfully beautiful debut.
