In collaboration with SCHUNCK, Filmhuis De Spiegel is screening five different films that, in the broadest sense, align with the themes of the Andy Warhol: Vanitas exhibition. On 20 October, the featured film will be 'Samsara'.
Samsara
In Laos, dozens of monks live and study in Buddhist temples. Every day, a young monk named Amid crosses the river to read a passage from the Tibetan Book of the Dead to an elderly woman. This text serves as a guide for finding the path to the afterlife. When the woman passes away, her spirit embarks on a journey toward reincarnation in a new body.
To fully experience the journey, you must allow yourself to be swept away by light and sound. It is worth following the director's guidance.
On the other side of the world, on the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar, a young girl named Juwairiya wakes up one morning to the news that a baby goat has been born. Juwairiya lives with her Muslim family in a coastal village where local women cultivate seaweed and make soap. They have their own ways of dealing with birth, life, death, and reincarnation.
Awarded the Special Jury Prize at the Berlin Film Festival, 'Samsara' transforms the cycle of life into an enriching experience that transcends the boundaries of reality. 'Samsara' is a unique cinematic experience, a meditative journey through different perspectives on life and death. In our opinion, it's the first masterpiece of the new year.
