Buladó

Buladó is a magical-realist and heartfelt family story from Curaçao, directed by the acclaimed filmmaker Eché Janga. The headstrong Kenza is determined to forge her own path between the two opposites in her life: her down-to-earth father and her spiritual grandfather. The film opened the Netherlands Film Festival.

Eleven-year-old Kenza lives with her father Ouira and grandfather Weljo on a car scrapyard in the interior of Curaçao. The two men are complete opposites: Ouira is a firm, rational police officer, while Weljo identifies with the island’s original inhabitants and its spiritual traditions.

As the conflict between Ouira and Weljo intensifies, Kenza resolutely seeks her own way between these extremes. Her father’s pragmatic mindset no longer provides all she needs, and gradually she opens herself up to the mystical and reassuring traditions of her grandfather.

La Última Ascensión

Before Buladó, the short film La Última Ascensión by photographer and filmmaker Kevin Osepa will be screened. As a young fisherman in Curaçao, Rowin struggles to stay afloat. One day, he has a mysterious encounter with a figure who seems to bring luck—his catch improves. As their bond grows, Rowin begins to confront his past and embrace his future.

With this film, director Kevin Osepa offers a fresh perspective on themes such as post-colonialism and Afro-Caribbean identity.

In addition to the exhibition Rinella Alfonso & Charles Eyck: On the Other Side of the Ocean, new work by Kevin Osepa is on display in the SCHUNCK vitrine.
