Fiona Lutjenhuis’ graphic novels, paintings and murals tell stories that join reality with fantasy. These stories are built up around ideas she encountered during her childhood: about life after death, supernatural powers, extraterrestrial life and fate. In this way she attempts to arrive at a definition of the truth. Her work is inspired by the stories and the illustrative style of Japanese and Korean comics: manga.
For her display 'Sideways Universe' in SCHUNCK, she has been inspired by stories in the SCHUNCK library. You encounter these as you climb the staircase. Floor by floor, Lutjenhuis’ story unfolds in the form of a mural and will eventually, in part, become an element of SCHUNCK’s art collection.

Murals in SCHUNCK
Murals appeal to a wide audience worldwide. In Heerlen, they have acquired a special position. So too in SCHUNCK Museum. Since 2012, collection artists Hadassah Emmerich, Troy Lovegates, Jan van der Ploeg, Wafae Ahalouch el Keriasti, Roland Schimmel, Femmy Otten, Gijs Frieling, Dan Zhu and Astrid Nobel realised murals in the SCHUNCK Glaspaleis.
They are interventions in the architecture of the Glaspaleis, spread over the five floors of the indoor staircase. SCHUNCK receives a financial contribution from the Mondriaan Fund for the murals and their integration in the visual art collection. Temporarily present, but at the same time immortalised.
