The exhibition Andy Warhol: Vanitas, featuring more than 100 works from the collection of The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, is on display at SCHUNCK from 15 September. Around the opening, PLT in collaboration with SCHUNCK and Cultura Nova is showing Gob Squad's Kitchen, based on Andy Warhol's film Kitchen.
Experimental and thrilling
In this performance at the intersection of theatre, art and film, the German/British company Gob Squad travels back to the underground culture in New York of 1965 to reconstruct Warhol's Kitchen live. Since none of the actors have seen the film themselves, they need the audience to fill out the performance. Not that much happens in the original film, by the way. The actors hang out in a kitchen and talk about sex, drugs and wild parties. Nothing actually happens. Yet Warhol's Kitchen perfectly sums up the experimental energy of the swinging 60s.
Modern life, pop music, stars, feminism, the era of free sex and drugs; it's all in the air. Or as Edie Sedgwick, one of the film's stars, says: "I'm living my role too - only I can't figure out what my role is in this film."
