SCHUNCK25 Maarten Bel - Groetjes uit Heerlen-Noord

Maarten Bel – Greetings from Heerlen-Noord: Chapter 1

From 26 October to 1 March, the SCHUNCK store window will be the domain of artist Maarten Bel. His presentation starts with a camping adventure at the Buurtcamping in Heerlen-Noord last summer.

The photos and memories of that weekend return as giant postcards: the Neighborhood Campsite Het Glaspaleis writes about how much fun it was—with an invitation for next year already included.

The Neighborhood Campsite as inspiration

What did camping look like? Maarten set up his teepee among the local residents at Sportpark de Varenbeuk. With a gas stove, pans from Action (or were they from IKEA?) and a bagpipe, he immediately attracted attention. Marshmallow sticks with names were made and a serious (but unsuccessful) attempt was made to build a pancake tower. Despite his Rotterdam accent, he was even tolerated as a bingo master and given a crash course in Dutch culture (he now knows what poekelen is). His idea for a bagpipe roll call at 6:30 a.m. was democratically voted down, but the atmosphere remained anything but dreary, despite the wet weather.

A preview of more to come

With Greetings from Heerlen-Noord: Chapter 1, Bel brings these moments back to life. The installation also serves as a preview: Maarten is not done camping in Heerlen yet. This project is part of ArtBase, a pilot program by the Mondriaan Fonds in which SCHUNCK explores how the collection can also function outside the museum.

About Maarten Bel

Maarten Bel (1987, Dordrecht) makes art from everyday life, often with a good dose of humor. He invites people to actively participate, making art not only something to look at, but also something to experience. You may know him from the VPRO program De Cadeaufabriek.
