MODULE #1 Martinus Papilaja
During The Notorious IBE, the first Heerlen interchangeable frame – MODULE – will be created. On a movable panel measuring approximately 3 by 8 metres, artist Martinus Papilaja will paint a new work live.
MODULE is an initiative by SCHUNCK in collaboration with Kool Cult and Robin Vermeulen (curator for art in public space), and marks the starting point of a new series of temporary art interventions in public space.
Martinus Papilaja
Papilaja (1988, Barneveld) creates large-scale murals, tattoos, and ballpoint drawings. His work resembles abstract graffiti, built from intuitive lines and complex, organic shapes. For MODULE, he draws inspiration from the Moluccan ‘Menari’ dance. In the context of IBE, where Kool Cult is inviting Moluccan breakdancers, he translates the movement language of dance into imagery. He regards his tags as a form of choreography; the body defines the shape and scale of the work.
After its unveiling, MODULE #1 will remain on view at this location until September 2025. Afterwards, the interchangeable frame will travel through the city, each time featuring new work by a different artist. The project is part of ArtBase, a nationwide pilot aimed at strengthening regional contemporary art.
The work will be created on Saturday 16 August, between 1:00 PM and 6:00 PM, next to SCHUNCK (Bongerd 8).
