Nomadic Mountains
1 Jul 2018 - 2 Dec 2018
Artist and guest curator Jean Bernard Koeman (1964) puts together a dazzling exhibition in collaboration with SCHUNCK and the Dutch Mountain Film Festival. The Refuge, the refuge in the wilderness, takes center stage.
A survey on high altitude mental architecture
Since its inception, mankind has sought protection in the harsh landscape. In an almost completely cultivated nature, The Refuge seems to be the last vestige of this. Refuges are structures, shelters or places of retreat.
Can an art institution also be a Refuge?
In the exhibition, a documentary examination of architecture above 1848 meters enters into a dialogue with artworks that explore mental spaces of at least the same height. As such, the exhibition is a wonderfully layered arrangement of visual art, architectural and textual documents. It shows contemporary developments of the mountain lodge, where humans move the world while walking. It also explores the mental position of the artist and the museum within it; “altitude poetics and building in silence.” Can an art institution also be a Refuge?
