The Charter for the Kingdom of the Netherlands, in effect since 1954, governs the constitutional structure between the Netherlands, Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten. It defines the balance between autonomy and unity, a relationship that remains in constant negotiation. But what does this actually mean for daily life?
'The Politics of Everyday Life' artistically explores how administrative, economic, and social power structures shape our everyday reality. Through murals in the building’s staircase, artists Christopher Pablo, Elijah Nicholas, Marcel van den Berg, and Ruthvienca Pietersz present their perspectives on the influence of the Charter on the social and cultural dynamics within the different countries of the Kingdom.
According to curator Raenys Martis, this project creates space for dialogue, reflection, and confrontation. Come, see, think along, and discover how politics is interwoven with our daily lives.
Murals at SCHUNCK
Murals speak to a wide audience worldwide and have earned a special place in Heerlen, including at SCHUNCK Museum. Since 2012, collection artists Hadassah Emmerich, Troy Lovegates, Jan van der Ploeg, Wafae Ahalouch el Keriasti, Roland Schimmel, Femmy Otten, Gijs Frieling, Dan Zhu, and Astrid Nobel have created murals at SCHUNCK Glaspaleis.
These interventions in the architecture of the Glaspaleis are spread across the five floors of the internal staircase. Temporarily present, yet simultaneously immortalized.
SCHUNCK receives a financial contribution from the Mondriaan Fund for the murals and their integration into the visual art collection.
This activity is part of the Year of Heerlen's Heritage. In 2025, numerous activities and events will be organized in Heerlen to make its heritage visible or tangible once again.
