Heerlen has not experienced a natural or linear development and is best described as a fragmented city. Its appearance is the result of a turbulent history. With the rise of the mining industry, Heerlen experienced unprecedented growth. The city exploded in a short time from 6,000 inhabitants to 60,000 inhabitants, becoming one of the richest cities in the Netherlands during that period. In the following years, a period of decline ensued, and the city faced economic downturn.

How has the city been envisioned over the past 100 years? What were the ideas about Heerlen, its center, the station, and the surrounding area? SCHUNCK selects unrealized projects by architects such as Frits Peutz, Francine Houben, and Jo Coenen, who have presented clear ideas about the city. These projects are part of Heerlen's rich architectural history and contribute to the city's image.
