Heerlen Town Hall
Heerlen Town Hall is an icon of progress, designed in 1945 by Frits Peutz – the same architect behind the Glaspaleis.
In 2023, the building underwent a complete renovation and was connected to the new city office designed by Mecanoo. Since then, the monumental hall has once again become a space where art and architecture enhance each other.
26 paintings and works on paper
On the ground and upper floors of the hall, you can now explore a selection of 26 works from the DSM collection. The exhibition features paintings and several works on paper from the collection’s early period. Visitors will encounter works by Ger Lataster, Jef Diederen, Pieter Defesche, Laurens Bisscheroux, Charles Eyck, Willem Hofhuizen, and Eugène Laudy. Artists such as Marianne Aartsen, Jean Adams, Harrie Bartels, Sjef Hutschemakers, Lei Molin, Frans Nols, Jopie Roosenburg, Bep Scheeren, Pierre van Soest, Siiri Spronken, Marijke Stultiens, Varpu Tikanoja, Hans Truijen, and Gisèle Waterschoot van der Gracht are also represented.
A tradition of exhibitions
Since 1945, the hall of Heerlen Town Hall has been used as an exhibition space. At the time, Mayor Marcel van Grunsven and Chief of Staff Pieter Defesche deliberately chose to make art accessible to the residents of Heerlen. SCHUNCK continues this tradition today, with presentations that showcase how the collection has developed over the years.
Connection with the city
With the donation of the DSM collection to the municipality of Heerlen, the Town Hall has gained additional significance. It is not only the administrative heart of the city but also a public space where the collection – once owned by a company – now forms part of the shared heritage. Complementing the contemporary works in SCHUNCK Museum, the Town Hall offers a view of the roots of the collection. Together with the presentation at the Nederlands Mijnmuseum (Dutch Mining Museum), it provides a complete picture of past and present.
