Art piece of the month: February

Hadassah Emmerich – Lounge (2003) olieverf op papier

Every month, we select a work from the (DSM) collection that inspires us, intrigues us, or engages us in a particular way. In February, that work is by Hadassah Emmerich.

Hadassah Emmerich – Lounge (2003)
Oil on paper

Hadassah Emmerich’s drawings stand out for their vivid colours and large scale. In her work, she combines a range of materials and techniques, including charcoal, ink, pastel, oil paint and acrylic. This layering creates compositions that evoke a strong sense of atmosphere.

During a journey through Indonesia, Emmerich was confronted with her roots. In her visual language, she seeks connections with exotic plant growth and references to the experiences and rituals of Indonesian culture. Recognisable forms are combined with flowing, winding lines that weave their way through proliferating vegetal elements.

Some works conceal words or sentences. Themes such as growth, flowering and decay merge into one another, giving the drawings a poetic and mysterious character.

This work can be seen in the museum gallery at SCHUNCK until 1 March, as part of the exhibition Rooted in Change.
