Art piece of the month: July
Each month we select a work from the (DSM) collection that inspires, fascinates, or engages us in another way. For the month of July, that work is by Roy Villevoye.

Roy Villevoye’s recent work has increasingly moved away from traditional painting. In his early paintings, he used colour and make-up as carriers of political and social meanings. Over time, however, he came to experience working in the studio as too limiting.
This sense of limitation led him to venture out into the world, using video and photography to document encounters between different visual cultures, always grounded in direct experience. In photography, Villevoye found a visual language that is immediate and capable of conveying his personal perspective.
In his work, he plays with cultural differences and explores connections between Western culture and the non-Western cultures of the places where he spends time. December 31, 1999 demonstrates how this approach translates into a powerful and direct image.
