Art piece of the month: June

Donya Saed Riders, 2003, inkt op kalkpapier

Each month we select a work from the (DSM) collection that inspires, fascinates, or engages us in another way. For the month of June, that work is by Donya Saed.

Donya Saed – Riders (2003)
ink on tracing paper

Through her work, Donya Saed tells stories about what we see and experience in everyday life. Her images begin on a small scale, with intimate and poetic drawings in charcoal, pen, pencil, and ink. She combines these with found imagery from magazines and with photographs she has taken herself.

The resulting collages are enlarged and printed onto transparent strips of paper, which are then assembled into monumental works. In this process, Saed deliberately brings together her personal visual language with slogans, symbols, and reproduction techniques drawn from the mass media.

Within this tension between attraction and repulsion, Saed invites the viewer to question identity, originality, form and content, illusion and reality. Riders is a clear example of this.
