Art piece of the month: November
In 2024, dsm-firmenich donated the former DSM collection to the municipal collection managed by SCHUNCK. Each month, we select a work from this donation that inspires us, fascinates us or captures our attention in another way. For November, we have chosen a work by Bas de Wit.
Bas de Wit – Tewrede wereld (2004)
Acrylic on canvas
Bas de Wit moves between painting and sculpture, creating unexpected connections within both disciplines. In his imaginative world, humans, animals and consumer society are inseparably intertwined. What initially appears light-hearted and playful reveals a sarcastic undertone upon closer inspection.
The seemingly innocent world of toys, cartoon characters, gnomes and children’s heroes from Sesame Street is transformed in his work into a faded dream. De Wit turns his figures into modern icons of the illusions on which contemporary society is built.
He does this in a light-hearted, colourful and expressive way, sometimes almost cheerful. At the same time, he demonstrates a mastery of leaving out unnecessary elements, keeping the tension between image and meaning sharply present.
