Art piece of the month: October
In 2024, dsm-firmenich donated the former DSM collection to the municipal collection managed by SCHUNCK. Each month, we select a work from this donation that inspires us, fascinates us or captures our attention in another way. For October, we have chosen a work by Bárbara Wagner.
Bárbara Wagner – Brazilian Man (2005)
Inkjet print on cotton paper
Bárbara Wagner explores in her photographic practice how themes such as the periphery, self-representation and exoticism relate to cultural globalisation. During a photographic presentation at DSM, she presented her research into social stereotypes that have developed within different societies, including Brazil, China and the Netherlands.
For this project, Wagner photographed groups of people in the cities of Recife, Guangzhou and Sittard. The people portrayed live their daily lives outside or beyond imposed norms surrounding beauty, behaviour, happiness, civilisation and prosperity.
During her stay in Sittard, Wagner also worked on a new series of photographs of members of the travelling community in South Limburg and Brabant. Brazilian Man forms part of her broader exploration of image-making, identity and cultural representation.
