Award-winning cartoonist Jip van den Toorn to visit SCHUNCK
How do you capture social issues in a single sharp, humorous drawing? On Wednesday 14 October, cartoonist Jip van den Toorn will talk about this in an interview with Hanna Zwart.
Van den Toorn is known for her cartoons in de Volkskrant, her book 'Hoe vond je zelf dat het ging?' and her appearance on De slimste mens. From 2019 to 2024, she wrote for the satirical television programme Dit was het nieuws. She has also appeared on Wie is de Mol? and as a sidekick on Sophie & Jeroen.
In 2018, Van den Toorn won the World Illustration Award for Inappropriate Grandma, a project featuring two hand-embroidered cushions depicting a naked male body. In 2022, she received an honourable mention for the Inktspot Prize for best political cartoon, becoming the first woman and youngest nominee ever to receive the distinction.
After the interview, Van der Velden Van Dam bookshop will be selling books during a short signing session. You can also visit Ina van Zyl: Where Are You From at SCHUNCK Museum. The exhibition received five stars from both de Volkskrant and Trouw and is on show until 25 October.
Like Van den Toorn, Van Zyl began her career as an illustrator. In South Africa, she drew for the satirical magazine Bitterkomix, which criticised the apartheid regime. Part of the exhibition is dedicated to this early work.
