Filmhuis De Spiegel X SCHUNCK: On the other side of the ocean
As part of Rinella Alfonso & Charles Eyck: On the other side of the ocean, SCHUNCK and Filmhuis De Spiegel are screening four special films this summer that tie in with the themes of the exhibition. The films can be seen in the Royal cinema in the heart of Heerlen, near Filmhuis De Spiegel.
Until 14 September, SCHUNCK Museum is dedicated to the exhibition 'On the other side of the ocean'. In it, the work of the Curaçao artist Rinella Alfonso and the Limburg painter Charles Eyck meet in a layered story about heritage, migration, identity and solidarity. Themes that also return in a penetrating, poetic and surprising way in the film programme compiled by Filmhuis De Spiegel together with SCHUNCK.
June - Ava & Gabriel
The programme kicks off on Sunday 22 June with Ava & Gabriel: Un historia di amor (1990) by Felix de Rooy, a Curaçao film classic in which a Dutch painter arrives in Curaçao and upsets the local community. A story about faith, colonial relations and forbidden love - and an iconic milestone in Antillean cinema. The film will be introduced by Guus Schulting (Filmkrant). He collaborated on Felix de Rooy's exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and interviewed him several times. Schulting will take us through De Rooy's work and cinema in Curaçao in general.
July - La Última Ascensión and Buladó
On Sunday 27 July two films from Curaçao are on show: Buladó (2020), awarded a Golden Calf for best film, and La Última Ascensión (2022) a short film by Kevin Osepa - whose work is also on display in SCHUNCK's showcase. Two quirky stories about loss, hope and magical thinking.
August - La Chimera
Finally, on Sunday 24 August, Alice Rohrwacher's La Chimera (2023) will be shown: a dreamy quest through the Italian landscape, in which archaeology, spirituality and colonial echoes intertwine. A film about what is left behind, and who or what we take with us from the past.
The film selection was created in close cooperation with Filmhuis De Spiegel. From the Royal cinema in the heart of Heerlen, the film house opts for stories that touch and make you think. The programme is part of the broader fringe programme accompanying the exhibition, including guided tours, festival afternoons and lectures.
