Five Stars in de Volkskrant for Ina van Zyl
De Volkskrant awarded Ina van Zyl: Where Are You From at SCHUNCK five stars, calling it "a mysterious, sensual universe".
What does de Volkskrant say?
"Stepping into the exhibition, you enter a mysterious, sensual universe in which nothing is what it first appears to be." This is how de Volkskrant describes the exhibition by Ina van Zyl. Reviewer Sarah van Binsbergen is struck by how Van Zyl transforms everyday objects — body parts, flowers, food — into paintings of remarkable expressive power.
What makes her work particularly striking is the tension between opposites: smooth and rough, strength and vulnerability, sensuality and humour. "All these opposing forces collide gently in this magnificent exhibition," writes Van Binsbergen. Of Van Zyl's technique, she adds: "Extraordinarily accomplished, the way Van Zyl blurs these boundaries."
About the exhibition
Ina van Zyl: Where Are You From is the most comprehensive overview of her work in the Netherlands to date. With around eighty paintings, Van Zyl — born in South Africa and based in the Netherlands since the 1990s — traces thirty years of a singular artistic practice. Alongside her paintings, the exhibition also presents early comic strips made for the South African satirical magazine Bitterkomix.
The exhibition is on view until 25 October 2026 at SCHUNCK Museum in Heerlen.
