Last weeks: On the other side of the ocean

The duo exhibition On the other side of the ocean can be seen at SCHUNCK Glaspaleis until 14 September. After that, the doors will close on this special encounter between two artists, two worlds, and two eras.

In this exhibition, the work of Rinella Alfonso (1995, Curaçao) and Charles Eyck (1897–1983, Meerssen) come together in a visual dialogue. Alfonso creates dreamlike paintings filled with personal symbolism, featuring objects, animals, and rituals from her youth in Curaçao. Eyck presents colorful impressions of the island, where he stayed in 1953. Although their worlds may seem far apart at first glance, they connect in their shared search for identity, memory, and imagination.

Publications and programming

Two publications accompany the exhibition: one on Charles Eyck, focusing on his months in Curaçao and his quest for renewal, and one on Rinella Alfonso, highlighting memory, superstition, and the power of imagery. Both editions are available in the SCHUNCK Glaspaleis museum shop.

The exhibition is complemented by a rich summer program, including a film series in collaboration with Filmhuis De Spiegel, a lecture by Monique Dickhaut, the Silent Reading Party in the museum, and two editions of Frictions Festival – among them the theatrical Wrestling Spectacle on 5 September. There are also Sunday tours, family activities, and more.

For those who still wish to experience this encounter between Curaçao and South Limburg, there are only a few weeks left. On the other side of the ocean is on view until Sunday 14 September 2025 at SCHUNCK Glaspaleis, Heerlen.
