Monograph by Ina van Zyl: Where Are You From
To accompany the exhibition by Ina van Zyl, a monograph has been published: Where Are You From, bringing together thirty years of work.
First comprehensive overview of Ina van Zyl
Alongside the exhibition Ina van Zyl: Where Are You From, the first extensive monograph on the work of Ina van Zyl (1971) is being published. The book brings together her paintings from the period 1997–2025: from intimate body fragments and still lifes to landscapes. Those who know her work from the exhibition at SCHUNCK Museum will find in this book a deeper exploration of everything on view in the museum.
Three decades of artistic individuality
Where Are You From reveals Van Zyl's visual language. Her work explores themes such as vulnerability, desire and memory, rooted in her South African background and her life in the Netherlands.
With great attention to detail, she builds her paintings layer by layer. Colours are intense and saturated, at times vivid and bright. Small details: a cut in an apple, a discoloured patch of skin, a frayed leaf edge. Those who look longer discover how motifs, forms and themes recur again and again across the years.
Monografie - Ina van Zyl
The publication Where Are You From and the exhibition of the same name at SCHUNCK bring together works from different periods and illustrate how her painting has refined itself in terms of concentration and precision.
The book is published by nai010 publishers and contains essays by Dominic van den Boogerd, Diana Quinby and Cynthia Jordens, and an interview by Joël Riff with Ina van Zyl. Together they explore the historical, personal and thematic dimensions of her work. The book is designed by Akiko Wakabayashi.
