New exhibition season opens with Ina van Zyl and three new presentations
With the opening of Ina van Zyl: Where Are You From, SCHUNCK has officially launched its new exhibition season. On Sunday 14 June, around 170 visitors came to the Glaspaleis for the opening of the first major Dutch survey exhibition of South African artist Ina van Zyl. At the same time, three new presentations also opened: Afterimage by Charlotte Koenen in the Atrium, Mein Freund, der Baum by Gladys Zeevaarders in the Display Window, and STAIRCASE by Romy Finke in the Staircase.
Ina van Zyl: Where Are You From
With Where Are You From, SCHUNCK presents nearly thirty years of work by Ina van Zyl (1971). The exhibition brings together early comics, drawings and paintings, revealing how the artist continually explores the boundaries between portraiture, still life and landscape.
In her work, Van Zyl focuses closely on toes, skin, flowers, fruit and everyday objects. What appears to be a toe becomes a hill or a valley. A flower evokes a body part, while an apple carries a sense of longing for home. In this way, Van Zyl invites visitors to look more slowly and attentively, reflecting on themes such as beauty, vulnerability, desire and origin.
The exhibition also includes a presentation of fifteen works by Aad de Haas. Van Zyl personally selected these works from the SCHUNCK collection, supplemented by loans. The presentation highlights the affinities she sees between her own work and that of De Haas.

New presentations at the Glaspaleis
Alongside the exhibition by Ina van Zyl, three new presentations have also opened.
In the Atrium, Charlotte Koenen presents Afterimage, an installation that emerged from her research into nineteenth-century lavoirs, historic public washhouses in the French countryside. Using wood, light-sensitive gelatine and photographic prints, she explores the relationship between architecture, water and memory.

In the store window, Gladys Zeevaarders presents Mein Freund, der Baum. Through drawings, prints and woven works, she explores the traces people leave behind in their surroundings and the ongoing interplay between humans and nature.

This year, the staircase is dedicated to Romy Finke. For STAIRCASE, she developed a series of Viewfinders that offer visitors new perspectives on the building, the city and the collection. The presentation also features contributions by artists with whom she shares close personal and artistic connections: Karin Peulen, Nieke Lemmens, Nonzuzo Gxekwa, Francy Finke and Petra Finke.
