Read more about Andy Warhol: Vanitas in the accompanying publication
On September 14, the book Andy Warhol: Vanitas will be published by nai010 publishers, accompanying the exhibition of the same name at SCHUNCK Museum.
The exhibition Andy Warhol: Vanitas is a collaboration between SCHUNCK Museum and The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. To complement this exhibition, a publication with the same name will be released on September 14, during the (private) opening of Vanitas.
Vanitas as a historical tradition
'Andy Warhol: Vanitas' highlights a lesser-known part of Warhol’s oeuvre: paintings and drawings of skulls and self-portraits, reminiscent of the 17th-century Vanitas genre. Spiritual themes such as transience and time are explored through (film) installations, paintings, and archival materials from Warhol's Time Capsules. Both the exhibition and the publication include some original engravings and mezzotints by Dutch engravers and painters from the 17th century, from the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, to illustrate the historical Vanitas tradition.
The book features contributions from Patrick Moore, director emeritus, Amber Morgan, director of collections and exhibitions, and Matt Gray, director of archives, from The Andy Warhol Museum. Additionally, there are contributions from Fabian de Kloe, artistic director, and Cynthia Jordens, senior curator, from SCHUNCK Museum. The book will be available from September 14 on nai010.com and in the SCHUNCK museum shop.
