SCHUNCK Collection at Bonnefanten
What happens when you bring three museum collections together and invite 27 guest curators to look at them with fresh eyes? The result is Cooking from the Fridge, a special exhibition at Bonnefanten in Maastricht. SCHUNCK is collaborating on the exhibition with Bonnefanten and Het Nieuwe Domein in Sittard. Queen Máxima will open the exhibition on Tuesday 10 November.
For Cooking from the Fridge, 27 guest curators from the Netherlands and abroad selected 270 artworks by 145 artists. All the works were acquired for the collections of the three museums over the past thirty years. From paintings and photography to film, video, sculptures and installations, an entire floor of Bonnefanten showcases the wealth of remarkable contemporary art held in South Limburg.
A fresh perspective on familiar collections
The exhibition marks the departure of Stijn Huijts as director of Bonnefanten. Huijts was previously director of SCHUNCK and of the predecessor of Het Nieuwe Domein in Sittard. Over the past thirty years, he has played an important role in the development of all three collections.
For this exhibition, the 27 guest curators were given the freedom to make their own selections. They include Fabian de Kloe, artistic director of SCHUNCK. Each curator brings artworks together in their own way, creating new connections, unexpected combinations and stories that reveal the diversity of the collections.
Cooking from the Fridge not only shows what the three museums have collected over the past thirty years, but also how artworks can be viewed and interpreted in new ways time and again. At the same time, the exhibition highlights the importance of South Limburg as a place where international contemporary art is collected and presented.
Queen Máxima opens the exhibition
On Tuesday 10 November, Queen Máxima will officially open the exhibition. During her visit, she will be given a guided tour and meet curators, artists and staff members.
Cooking from the Fridge is on display at Bonnefanten in Maastricht from 11 November 2026 to 5 September 2027.
