SCHUNCK’s Andy Warhol exhibition now on view in the US

The successful exhibition Andy Warhol: Vanitas, which was on display earlier this year at SCHUNCK Museum in Heerlen, opened on Friday, 10 October at The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh (USA), the artist’s birthplace. The exhibition will run there until 9 March 2026.

Heerlen hosted the international premiere of this special exhibition in 2024. SCHUNCK Museum offered a fresh perspective on the life and work of one of the twentieth century’s most iconic artists. For the exhibition, SCHUNCK Museum collaborated closely with The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. The exhibition was complemented with various Vanitas works from the Rijksmuseum.

The Andy Warhol Museum was so impressed by the curatorial approach that it decided to include Vanitas -including the loans from the Rijksmuseum - and the accompanying publication in its own programming. This marks a special continuation of the collaboration between Heerlen and Pittsburgh. Opportunities are also being explored to bring the exhibition to other locations in the United States and beyond. Specific dates and venues will be announced later. The SCHUNCK team was invited to attend the opening and provide insights into the exhibition’s concept and the connection between Heerlen and Pittsburgh.

Vanitas offers visitors an intimate and confronting glimpse into Warhol’s fascination with death, the transience of beauty and life, religion, and his own mortality. Through artworks and personal objects, the exhibition reveals a side of Warhol that is rarely explored. While Warhol is primarily known for his colorful silkscreens of celebrities, Vanitas presents a deeper, darker perspective, infused with the irony and humor that were characteristic of his work.
