The Mystical and the everyday of Kevin Osepa

From 18 May, photographer and filmmaker Kevin Osepa presents his new installation Beneath a Sacred Street in the store window of SCHUNCK Glaspaleis. In this work, the reality of everyday life blends seamlessly with the magical world of Afro-Caribbean rituals.

Kevin Osepa (1994, Curaçao) is known for his imagery that weaves together the personal and the collective. Drawing from his own youth, deeply influenced by the spiritual practices of Brua, he explores mystical rituals, customs, and ancestral stories. In doing so, he not only expresses his own search for identity but also pays tribute to older generations of the Antillean community.

Through themes such as identity, masculinity, gender, and the longing for home, Osepa connects the autobiographical to broader societal questions. His work invites us to reflect on how past and present, the visible and the invisible, are deeply intertwined.

This installation complements the exhibition On the other side of the ocean at SCHUNCK, which focuses on the connection between Curaçao and Limburg. Osepa’s work is also featured in the accompanying film programme by SCHUNCK and Filmhuis De Spiegel.

Beneath a sacred street is on view free of charge in the store window of SCHUNCK Glaspaleis until 14 September 2025.
