Multi-functional Ice hockey stadium at Krefeld

Location

The new building is located on „Westparkstrasse“ at Krefeld, opposite an existing ice stadium. This new multi-functional facility, which can hold up to 8.000 visitors, will be used primarily for icehockey events.

Concept

A square volume of 108 x 86m forms an infrastructure zone around an oval event centre.
A glass facade with exterior louvers is the boundary of the outer ring. The colour scheme of this facade is dominated by different blue and green tones. The prototype of these colours is based on colour studies of iceberg pictures.

The aim of the design is to create a dynamic elevation of the building, a synonym for the speed and dynamics in ice-hockey games.
During the day, it will appear as a semi-transparent building that does not offer its interior to the outside. By night, it will change into a glowing extroverted building.

The entire technical equipment as well as all the rooms for the sportsmen are located in the basement. The ground floor and the 2nd floor are public. The 1st floor offers a VIP lounge with all media equipment, gastronomy and a conference area.

Roof

The chief standards of the roof display a maximum spread of structure and present a high level of noise absorbance in addition to optimum natural ventilation.
The roof design is based upon a minimum slope which emphasises the building’s long axis.
Both factors are key to the urban and the dynamic appearance of the whole design. By using a flexible daylight system it is possible to create different light situations.
