The Castel des Courtines, located within the university domain of Sart-Tilman in Liège, represents both a conceptual and physical expansion of the Château de Colonster and its outbuildings.

This project, carefully integrated into the site through a detailed historical analysis, aspires to create a multidisciplinary space where researchers, students, and city residents can meet and exchange ideas. A study on the university's needs and expectations helped define the program, which includes a residence for researchers, a space for workshops, a welcoming area for conference participants, and a study space open to the public.

Inspired by the imagery of castles and fortified walls, the project evokes a reimagined medieval courtyard. "Le Castel" unfolds as a massive, inhabited wall made of reclaimed bricks, with alternating solid and open spaces. Double-height rooms and external walkways, which overlook the courtyard or valley, create dynamic spatial experiences. These walkways evoke the elevated paths of medieval castles, connecting old and new elements seamlessly. Entrances to the compound are subtly concealed, offering a sense of controlled access.

The construction system has been designed to allow for future reconfigurations. The structure, composed of brick load-bearing walls and wooden beams, allows for modifications to the floors and internal partitions.

Taking advantage of the site's topography, split levels have been created, with the first level directly connected to the castle, housing public functions, while the second level hosts private residences. This difference in elevation helps distinguish public areas from private spaces, while offering rooftop terraces that serve as viewpoints. The terrain's morphology also influenced the design of a courtyard that follows the slope, creating varied atmospheres. Dynamic functions such as a café, workshops, and event spaces are placed on the ground floor, enhancing the courtyard's vibrancy and promoting interaction with the outdoor environment, reflecting its original welcoming nature.
