Visiting and Information Centre - “Hohes Venn”. FH Aachen (Germany)
The nature reserve “Hohes Venn” is part of the German-Belgian national park and is considered to be a farstretching, pristine natural landscape. The visiting centre is to provide information and to meet the
requirements in order to make the location and its qualities eventful.
Under the concept, the functions are divided into three independent entities which are connected by sight
relations and respond to different landscaping circumstances. Connecting paths between the structural
components allow - through the integration of nature and weather conditions - a sensitization of senses andconscious perception of the surroundings.
Research / Information
The functions research / information are accommodated in a cubic building, whose morphology yields a quiet and an introverted character. The squarely sketched body rests in the woods and the atrium, which is
accessible to the public, emphasizes the independent presence in the midst of nature.
The front consists of a multi-level fabric of reinforcing steel mats, which give a homogeneous form to the
body. The building is the starting point for a loop-hiking trail.
Exhibition
The exhibition part is exposed and benefits from the sloping topography of its surroundings, which allows for an extensive view. Location and stylistic idiom let it still appear unobtrusive.
In addition to the actual information transfer, the open structure of the pavilion enables an immediate
experience of nature and weather, which become part of the exhibition. Thanks to the linear shape and the
meandering sequence of rooms inside, the pavilion becomes part of the trail through the landscape.
Hermitage
Small housing units make it possible to experience the calm atmosphere of the place over a longer period of time.
Materials
The materials were selected, taking into account their associations with nature. The surfaces must be able to age and transform over time and adjust in structure and character to the rough and defiant nature.
