Reconversion of the HASARD coalfield. ISA Saint-Luc Liège (Belgium)

EAP11 2001 Angéline Bayet

THEME : Reconversion of the HASARD coalfield.

PROJECT : Euregional theatre and dance school

PLACE : Cheratte, alongside the Meuse, connectible with the existing rail network and very close to the Aachen – Maastricht – Liège interchange, is a highly potential euregional area.

With its assets and the support of a voluntarist policy, Cheratte could become an important centre of attraction, a new cultural beacon, a new and attractive residential area, a pilot district as regards urban renovation. In an enlarged perspective, new functions - favouring liveliness and encounters - could favourably be mixed with life in the district.

The proposed intervention makes it possible to approach the area, leaning on the strong elements and the major main lines present in Cheratte.

By integrating the speed of the pedestrian, the motorist and that of the train, the project brings an interaction of full and empty spots which enrich the landscape with varied sensorial sequences.

Thus, the public area favourable to movements and exchanges becomes a fluid matter that spreads between the buildings and is transformed into a series of qualified spaces.

The theatre and dance school, favourable to movements and exchanges, is a major sequence of the project.

The proposed journey of the occupants materializes in an architecture where the dynamic linking of varied areas, rhythm, light being cut out, external areas, highly concern the visitor’s sensitivity and arouse a corporal response.

Thus, thanks to its location, its function and the web of relations that it creates with the whole of the area, the school is supposed to be a pivot, an axis, an articulation between what existed and still exists and allows the development of a new dynamism and a new diversity in the Cheratte suburbs.
