The mind as architect of imagination and spatial experience. AAM (The Netherlands)
The project focuses on designing a home for people with visual impairments, inspired by experiences during an internship at a home for blind individuals. This fascinating theme has led to research into how architecture can contribute to sensory experiences when visual perception is absent. The project emphasizes the relationship between the designer, user, and physical space, with the challenge of creating a building that appeals to people through other sensory means.
The chosen location is in Wittevrouwenveld, Maastricht, an area that has become more connected to the city due to the arrival of the Groene Loper. The site is situated between historical buildings such as the Lourdes Church and the Theresiaschool, designed by local architect Frits Peutz. These buildings served as inspiration for the design, respecting the architectural language of the area.
In the design, the central corridor functions as the backbone of the building, serving as a navigation tool for users. Various spaces are connected to this corridor, each differing in light, acoustics, scent, and texture. This makes the experience of each room unique and helps residents orient themselves more easily. The outdoor area also caters to the senses: the garden features various plants with specific scents and textures, allowing people to connect with nature in different ways.
The urban design plan focuses on creating an inner courtyard, a place that encourages social interaction. The openness of the design and the various functions within the building, such as a café and a gym, provide opportunities for social engagement and integration with the neighborhood. In this way, it becomes not just a home, but a complete living environment for people with visual impairments.
