Eben-Emael is the place where WOII started for Belgium. The history teaches us, than not only during this world war. But also earlier battles took place on this site. ‘Caestert’ was en still is a very strategic point in Belgium.

In a museum is not only the exhibition of importance, but also the location and environment must have meaning. The Royal Museum of Military History at Brussels hasn’t played a big deal in any world war. That’s why an extension of the museum could take place in Eben-Emael.
We look at the existing fort, like an underground city. The idea is in the representation from the fall of the fort after his attack. It’s ‘broken’- by an air attack. The ’broken’ fort shows itself in the architecture as a section/corridor in the marl hill, which forms het primary circulation across the museum. The whole concept lies in the combination of the fortress construction characteristics. The trenches from WOI, which will be formed by the new additions , and the existing fort from WOII. At important sections in the museum we will find a tower, an indication for secondary routes and gives us a view over the landscape.
The exhibition spaces are each adjusted to certain themes, the materialization of the spaces and towers will be from local materials (marl), each processed in a other way.
