„How can an industrial wasteland be transformed into a future-oriented, integrative urban element that respects its history, stimulates new developments, and complements the surrounding districts in a meaningful way?“

After one year of studying in Naples as erasmus-students we chose the city to be the topic of our thesis. The incredible complexity, the enormous density and pulsating liveliness of the mediterranean metropolis fascinated us from the beginning. Naples is confronted with various problems challenging the urban development. Outflow of young professionals, lack of jobs and backlog in infrastructure renewal. Meanwhile more and more people from rural areas are pushing into the city in search of work, education and a future.

Within the centres east lies an area which caught our special interest. It is characterised by its industrial and infrastructural history and offers potential for urban development due to its proximity to the historic core. The intention of our thesis is to line out how these potentials can be activated. The goal is to design a neighbourhood that represents a future-oriented, integrative urban district, that respects its history, but also initiates new developments and complements the context in a meaningful way.

Based on the analysis of the existing urban structure and the socio-economic trends, we designed an alternative future scenario for the site. In doing so, the area is to become a place of identification for the residents. The existing industrial heritage will be integrated. The conversion creates a creative millieu. Spaces for associations, educational institutions, start-ups and leisure facilities are to be created and sensibly supplemented by new typologies. In the end, a dense, mixed neighbourhood is to be created that is unique in the urban context, but takes on the characteristics of the city and functions in interaction with it.
