Local center Martin-Luther, Cologne. FH Aachen (Germany)
Task of the dissertation was the reorganization of the construction block Martin Luther's place and the draft of a new local center for Martin-Luther church in south town of Cologne. Existing elements were the church and the bell-tower. The „itself outwardly opening" should be in the foreground with the architectural formulation of the place.
Draft
The originating urban space should be recognized above all from the main streets as such and offer a center of attraction. Beside the high belfry it requires a construction body that moves the attention on itself, but likewise does justice to the use and the ideology standing behind it. Thus a solitaire arose which forms an eye-catcher and leaves enough free space to the existing development.
The construction body of my draft originated from the idea to touch the necessary functions, namely the center and the requested private uses (apartments for sextons and priests), in two different construction bodies. Besides, the "clear glass cube" symbolizes the public uses and the closed construction body the introverted functions. This closed body covers my local center and surrounds it. In the public part of the building wooden cubes are used which catch the hall and the group-rooms. Thus in the open space stands again a steady core.
With the surrounding construction body the principle reverses, so that patios open there upwards.
Material
For the closed body I have chosen a polished basalt-stone which additionally supports the "massive" character.
The opposed cubes are wainscoted with a dark-reddish wood which should provide a warm atmosphere and explains a counterpole to the "steady" stone.
Result
A building has originated which has attained a stamping character by material and forms. It would leave a lasting impression in the townscape and give a new identity to the local center.
