“Fluxus” vibrant Europe. FH Aachen (Germany)
The assignment of the degree dissertation is to draft an idea of “Europe” free from the constraints of preconceived concepts.
Siegburg is well connected to the European infrastructure, especially the airports Cologne/Bonn and Frankfurt. The landscape and culture of the city is animated by Bonn and the Rhine valley. The site is bounded by urban life, nature and a river embankment.
The way I see it, “Europe” requires innovative ideas, close bonds and progressive motion. These perspectives are incarnate in its youth. The European youth has to be excited for “Europe” with vivid and modern imaginaries. Both elements, motion and youth, are the keynotes of my project.
My draft is a concept in interplay with landscape.
"Fluxus" refers to the flowing, wave-like form of my design, which concentrates on the presented embankment and reinterprets it. Its form and motion are integrated in the dam in such a manner that its existing structure is reflected throughout the concept.
The plan also integrates characteristic features of the stream and the mountainscape.
Glass fronts and roofs twist with the overall dynamism of the building. This motion stirs up waves that create an in-between space that blends into nature:
Inside and outside, covered and opened, building=landscape.
A walk through the building becomes a sequential expedition. The entrance, accessible by way of the embankment, leads onto ramps, cascadingstairs and alternating closed and open spaces give youths the invitation to move and travel.
Three closed boxes define concentration and introverted work. Open plains and airspaces facilitate: Horizontal and vertical communication, association transcending levels, reaching into the surrounding scenery.
The motifs:Communication, transcultural exchange and debate about future perspectives become lively in relevant spaces.
The objective of my project is to promote creativity and cooperation. Young, vibrant and flowing, the building is intended to embody a paradigm of what "Europe" can be.
