MACRO
Beringen is a city with many outdated schools, therefore, the assignment was to
design a campus on the site Bogaersveld, +300m from the existing centre. By
placing sight axes, a link is created between the old centre and Bogaersveld. The
curved building provides tension and accompanies the visitor on the site.

MESO
Education = mine . college ², stands for the design of a new middle school on
Bogaersveld. The building is conceived as a circle that is folded away from the
street and opens up to the public square. This form can be understood as a kind of
waving carpet, its prophase is to create one large comfortable venue for the
different cultures in Beringen. The use of glass inside gives the impression that the
boundaries between in- and outside blur and that everything resolves in an ‘open
school’. This is exacerbated by the spatial vides and curved forms. On the ground
floor are the general spaces, including: cafeteria, secretaries, library…, etc. while
the various fields are on the upper floors: languages, science, hard and soft industry
sector. Although the fields are separated, they are hold together into a formal
whole, which benefits the sense of togetherness.

MICRO
At the micro level, the open structure makes it possible to alternate between open
and closed classrooms. They are separated by flexible storage walls, making the
premises easily to adjust. The curved forms are translated in concrete furniture,
placed on the square and on the patios. To picture the image of the mixed cultures,
the glass facade on the outside of the half circle is lined with photos from the
different continents. These are cut and randomly placed, so that the result is a
puzzle with pictures from around the world.
