The Lodging Pavillion. Academie voor Bouwkunst (The Netherlands)
Notwithstanding the fact that the project ending my studies is a fictitious assignment, I wanted to create a building with a certain real life character. Child care is a present-day social theme for which there is a growing demand. Fashioning a temporary residence for children, for use both during the day and in the evening, might bring a possible solution to different circumstances. During the day, the building, besides being a day residence, can also be an extension to the primary education process (as a theater, doctor’s office, etc.). In the evenings, besides serving as a lodging, it can be an accommodation for clubs such as scouts, sportsclubs, e.a.. In this manner, the building will have an essential function within the City of Maastricht, causing the children to become familiar with it.
The location chosen is the Griendpark in Maastricht (NL). A spot presently occupied by a garage. By situating the lodging pavillion at this spot, the abandoned park will be given a new purpose. This location is also central to all primary schools in Maastricht. The temporary nature of uses of the pavillion is reflected by the temporary nature of lodging.
In its (apparent) simplicity, clarity, use of materials and careful detailing, the building provides a firm base. It projects contradictions which link to or complement each other. By introducing a theme of alienation, allowing that what cannot or may not be done at home, the building wants to become even more inviting for children. At the same time, the building’s architecture educates. The aim is to obtain maximum creativity from a child with minimum means. The building functions as a hotel, but is experienced as tent camping. Sensory perception, indications through pictograms, and a clear structure render the building exciting and comprehensible for all ages.
